Missing child policy

When your child is in my care my biggest priority is that they are safe and remain with me.

However, sometimes a child can become ‘lost’ in a busy area and as a responsible childminder I have written a procedure to deal with such a situation.

  • I will immediately raise the alarm to all who are around me, inform them I have lost a child and enlist their help to search for them.

  • I will provide all involved in the search with a detailed description of the child.

  • If it is a secure area I will ensure all exits are sealed.

  • If CCTV covers the area I will inform the staff/security so that they can monitor the CCTV and use this to help search for the child.

  • I will reassure all other children within my care so they do not become too distressed.

  • I will then inform the police and provide them with a full description of the child.

  • I will then inform the parents/carers of the child.

I will take all precautions necessary to ensure that such situations do not occur. In order to do this I will implement the following measures:

  • Ensuring that children hold either my hand or the pushchair when out.

  • Avoid going to any place that is overcrowded.

  • On outings children will wear a wrist band/or have a keychain on their zip with my mobile number on.

  • I will teach the children the dangers of wandering off

  • I will conduct a visual risk assessment of any area I take your child in order to identify any exit routes.
