Administering medicines policy

As indicated by section 3.42 of the EYFS I need to ensure that I have effective procedures in place to meet the individual needs of all children when administering medicines. These procedures will include:

  • Medicine will be stored in the top cupboard of the kitchen that has a safety lock on the door. If medicine is not suitable to be kept at room temperature it will be kept on the top shelf of the fridge, the fridge will have a safety lock on it.

  • All medicine will need to have the child’s name and DOB on it, correct dosage, correct storage procedure as well as the signature of the parent.

  • All medicine will need to be provided by the child’s parent/carer. I will not administer medicine to a child that I have purchased for use on my own child.

  • Any medicines that are expected to be given whilst in my care must have been given on a previous occasion in order to protect against allergic reactions.

  • Have written permission from each child’s parent/carer for each medicine that may need to be administered.

  • Keep a written record of each medicine that has been administered including date, time and dosage given.

  • Inform each child’s parent/carer each time a medicine has been administered on the same day/or when appropriate (as stated by section 3.44 of the EYFS).

  • I will confirm with parents the correct dosage of medicine before administering and keep a written note of this.

  • If any specific technical knowledge is required in the administration of a medicine I will attend training to learn how to do this before administering.

  • Prescription medicine will only be given to the child if it is on a prescription from a doctor, dentist or other health care professional.

  • Non-prescription medicine will only be given to a child if prior written permission has been given by a parent/carer and only when it is essential for health reasons such as a high temperature spike.

  • If a child has specific medical needs I will ensure I have detailed knowledge of this before I administer any medicines.

  • If I have not administered a medicine I will ensure the parent/carer is aware of this and that they take responsibility for administering the correct dose.
