Accidents and emergency policy

It is my policy that whilst children are in my care they are kept safe.

My premises have been inspected and meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). I regularly review and update my safety routines. I also practice my safety routines regularly, including fire drills.

I have a current pediatric first aid certificate and this will be kept up to date at all times.

In accordance with section 3.48 of the EYFS I have a fully stocked first aid kit that is kept in the kitchen cupboard closest to the front door. All parents/carers emergency contact numbers are kept with the first aid box. I also have a small portable first aid kit that I will take with me on all outings, this will also contain parents/carers emergency contact numbers.

I hold written permission from the parents/carers of each child to seek emergency treatment for their child if needed. This permission is kept within each child’s personal file.

All accidents will be recorded in the accident record book and parents/carers will be notified as soon as possible. In accordance with section 3.49 of the EYFS I must notify OFSTED of any serious accident or injury to a child whilst in my care.

Procedure (how I will put these statements into practice)

If there is an accident:

  • I will reassure the injured child whilst making sure that all other children in my care are safe. This may involve strapping a child into a buggy for example.

  • I will then attempt to deal with the injury myself; if this is not possible I will ring 999.

  • I will accompany the injured child to hospital whilst ensuring that my other children are still safe (I will contact all children’s parents at the first appropriate time)

I will inform the injured child’s parents/carers as soon as it is possible.

If I have to accompany the child to hospital I will call the parents and arrange for them to meet me at the hospital.

If I have an accident I will get the nearest responsible adult to help me to ensure the children in my care are safe.

I will have on me at all times a card indicating that I am a childminder and that indicates where parents emergency contact details can be found. This is to ensure that the children within my care can be reunited with their parents/carers even if I am unconscious.

At all times I will do my best to ensure that the children in my care are safe, reassured and kept calm.
