Food and drink policy

It is my policy that when children are provided with meals, snacks and drinks within my setting that what they will be provided will be healthy, balanced and nutritious (this is in line with section 3.45 of the EYFS).

Procedure

  • I will obtain and record information from parents/carers about each child’s individual dietary requirements.

  • I will obtain all information from the parents/carers of each child regarding any allergies; this information will be recorded and kept safe with the child’s records. I will also keep a note of these allergies with my first aid kits in order to be able to inform emergency services in case of a reaction.

  • In a situation where a child within my care has an allergy I will ensure, wherever possible, that the allergen is not made accessible to the child.

  • When parents/carers provide food for their children to consume within my setting I will provide appropriate storage space eg.fridge.

  • I will always provide clean and appropriate cutlery and crockery for each child to eat their food.

  • I will provide each child with an age appropriate cup, if this is a cup with a spout/straw it will be for the individual use of the child and will be named.

  • Children will be provided with healthy meals, snacks and drinks as appropriate and recommended by the food standards agency.

  • Fresh drinking water will be available at all times.

  • As a provider of meals and snacks I am aware of my responsibilities under food hygiene legislation. This includes, if necessary, registration with the relevant Local Authority Environmental Health Department. If this is the case then I am happy to have my premises inspected by a food safety officer.

  • Pets will be kept out of food preparation areas at all times. Where a pet does gain access to a preparation area I will ensure that all areas are thoroughly cleaned with antibacterial spray.

  • Nappy changing facilities will not be anywhere near any food preparation areas.

  • Laundry will not be undertaken during food preparation and any soiled clothing will not come into contact with any food preparation areas.

  • If there is an outbreak of food poisoning that affects more than 2 children within my setting I will inform Ofsted at the soonest possible opportunity, but within 14 days at the very least.

  • I will keep all food receipts so that any food poisoning outbreaks can be traced back to the source.
