Illnesses, infectious diseases and exclusion policy

It is important that whilst in my care I keep children safe, promote good health and hygiene and take the steps needed to prevent the spread of infectious diseases/illnesses.

Infectious diseases/illness

  • I hold a current pediatric first aid certificate and also have a fully stocked first aid kit (this includes a portable first aid kit that will be taken on outings)

  • When dealing with infectious diseases/illnesses I will follow the exclusion guidelines provided by the department of health (see attached document). I will discuss these guidelines and keep a written record of any illnesses that require exclusion.

  • I will expect any child to not return to my setting until the exclusion period is over. This is to protect the health and wellbeing of my family and any other children in my care.

  • I will keep a written record of any illnesses that were identified whilst in my care.

  • In accordance with the contract I have agreed to with parents I expect to be paid for the child’s place even if excluded from my setting for an infectious disease/illness.

  • If I or any member of my family contracts an infectious disease/illness I will inform you as soon as I am able. My setting will not be open during the exclusion period and I will not expect to be paid during this time.

  • I will inform the parents/carers of all other children in my setting if it is confirmed your child has an infectious disease/illness.

  • I will also need to inform OFSTED if any child within my setting has contracted a serious contagious disease/illness.

Hygiene

  • I will promote a hygiene policy that will include washing hands in warm, soapy water before handling food and after using the toilet.

  • Children will have access to their own face cloth that I will provide and will wash as necessary.

  • I will provide and promote the use of tissues for children who have a cough/cold.

  • All spillages of bodily fluids will be cleaned up immediately using antibacterial spray or wipes.

  • I will have a dedicated changing mat for nappy changes that will be antibacterial wiped after each use. I will also have access to disposable gloves for use in changing dirty nappies where necessary.

Pets

  • I will ensure that all animals on the premises are healthy and safe to be around. This will include them being up to date on all injections, worming and flea treatments.

  • I will also ensure any litter trays are kept clean and hygienic and kept in a safe area that children are un able to access

PROCEDURE (how I will put these statements into practice)

If there is a child within my care who becomes ill during the childminded period, or whom I believe to have an infectious disease/illness I will:

  • Contact the parent/carer for immediate collection of the child

  • Ensure that the child is excluded from the setting for the appropriate amount of time as indicated by the department of health document
